Why I built this
I have always loved data, especially when it is measured over time. Every geographic area, from countries and states down to cities, counties, and zip codes, has countless indicators measuring various aspects of life. My main goal was to see exactly which of these indicators actually correlate with each other. More specifically, I was interested in exploring time-shifted correlations to understand how a shift in one metric might relate to a change in another down the line. I wanted a way to cut through the noise and reveal the genuine statistical patterns hidden across different places.
About PlaceStats
PlaceStats provides free, accessible statistics for every country, United States state, county, and city. It allows researchers, students, and curious individuals to compare places across hundreds of distinct measures, drawing from reputable sources like the United Nations, the World Bank, the Census Bureau, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The core mission of the platform is to help users distinguish between genuine statistical patterns and correlations that are merely the result of underlying wealth or regional similarities. By automatically adjusting for confounding factors like income, population density, and regional geography, the site ensures that users are comparing like with like when they analyze geographic data, providing a much clearer picture of how places truly differ. To achieve this, the platform evaluates tens of thousands of data pairs to see which links that hold up remain valid after rigorous checks. Often, rich places differ from poor ones on almost everything at once, making almost any two measures seem linked even when they have nothing to do with each other. PlaceStats addresses this by comparing countries with similar incomes and United States counties with similar levels of crowding, wealth, and education. It also accounts for the reality that neighboring places tend to share characteristics, ensuring that nearby regions are not treated as entirely unrelated cases. Furthermore, its statistical adjustments filter out associations that might appear real by pure chance due to the sheer volume of tests run. Users can view these adjusted findings across the site, diving into the statistical ties that genuinely survive under scrutiny. Visitors to the site can look up specific locations to see how they perform on health, safety, education, and economic metrics alongside the most comparable places. Every tested correlation has its own dedicated page displaying the relationship before and after fair comparisons are applied, complete with visual representations and interactive charts. The platform recalculates the link directly in the browser as users toggle different variables within the interactive data explorer. For those wanting a broader perspective, an overarching grid displays all significant correlations simultaneously, illustrating how deeply national income influences global differences and showing exactly which patterns vanish once money is removed from the equation. Beyond the raw tools, the site publishes long-form analysis that takes single questions and tests them every way the data permits. These detailed investigations cover complex topics such as global fertility declines, tax collection patterns based on citizen voice, and local migration habits in tightly knit communities. Throughout the platform, all technical terms like standard deviation or statistical significance are explained in plain English so that even high school students can follow the math and logic. PlaceStats remains entirely free to use with no paywalls or required accounts, strictly maintaining that its figures highlight broad geographic associations rather than implying direct causation for individuals.
